Szikra Art Gallery

The Szikra Art Gallery is located in downtown Budapest (7 Vármegye str. 1053). The gallery was founded in February 2020 by art historians Gábor Kaszás and Dóra Csányi. Its profile includes the organization of contemporary art exhibitions, events, as well as the representation of contemporary artists.

Among the wide range of galleries in Budapest, Szikra focuses primarily on the representation of the immanent artistic processes or movements, since the specific historical and cultural characteristics of Hungary and Central Europe have not allowed for a peaceful, calm and balanced development of different visual arts (artistic trends) in the 20th century. This particular situation differs in many aspects from the Western European cultural space which can also create a sense of deprivation.

The feeling of scarcity and the main aspects of it, resulting from the specific historical and cultural conditions of our region, are in the focus of Szikra. While respecting the traditions of fine arts, the gallery seeks to represent the phenomena and achievements of art built from within. In contrast to the aspirations of the socially critical and socially sensitive art, Szikra attempts to present artistic productions that unfold from the crosstalk of different cultural layers. Obviously, the goal is not simply to document the ideological roots of different art concepts, but rather to confront and parallelize the results of the field provided by different cultural traditions. Szikra takes the position that seeks to embrace those image-making strategies where art is able to create new aesthetic value primarily by reflecting on itself and its own inner traditions.
