The connection of the main organizers of Budapest Contemporary—Ádám Tausz and Katalin Tausz—to art dates back more than three decades. Their first art fair, Antik Enteriőr, organized in 1994, was staged as a classical and contemporary art event and was later recognized in the 2000s as one of the most visited art fairs in Central and Eastern Europe. Since 2019, they have held the Art and Antique classical and contemporary exhibition and fair every spring, attracting strong public interest year after year. Budapest Contemporary launched in 2023, and in 2026 it will take place for the fourth time at the Bálna in Budapest.

Budapest Contemporary presents works by both nationally and internationally recognized contemporary artists in collaboration with outstanding galleries operating according to international professional standards. Its aim is to create a high-quality, focused, and transparent art fair and professional program that appeals equally to experienced art collectors, the general public interested in contemporary art, and younger generations. The professional partner of Budapest Contemporary is the Association of Contemporary Galleries (National Association of Hungarian Contemporary Art Galleries), reorganized in 2010.
