TOBE Gallery was founded in Budapest in October 2013 to establish an internationally visible platform for Hungarian and Ibero-American contemporary artists. The gallery focuses primarily on photography and photo-based art, with the artists it represents combining a commitment to high artistic quality with an experimental approach. TOBE Gallery’s mission is to promote, introduce, and foster appreciation for contemporary photography as widely as possible. To this end, the gallery regularly participates in major international art fairs, including Paris Photo, Unseen Amsterdam, and Photo London, as well as international festivals. The gallery firmly believes that photography is an equal partner to any other artistic discipline. Many of the 20 artists it represents work across multiple media, allowing TOBE to present different image-making techniques in an interconnected and non-hierarchical way.

In November 2017, TOBE Gallery began operating on Bródy Sándor Street. The new, larger gallery space has created greater opportunities to bring the work of international artists to the attention of the Budapest art scene, while also contributing to placing contemporary Hungarian photography in an international context. Since 2022, TOBE has operated two exhibition spaces: the larger gallery space primarily provides a platform for presenting photographic artists, while TOBE Cabinet hosts more pop-up-style exhibitions and events. The gallery’s new initiative, TOBE Project, explores the exciting interactions between different artistic disciplines, including painting, video art, and sculpture.

At the 2026 Budapest Contemporary Art Fair, TOBE Gallery and TOBE Project will present a joint booth. Focusing on the encounter between photography, painting, and sculpture, the presentation explores the connections and dialogues between different media. At the heart of the selection is the theme of JOY: the joy of life, curiosity, and new beginnings — the renewed momentum and energy that can emerge after facing difficulties. The works examine how moving forward can simultaneously become the starting point for new possibilities.
