SZIKRA Art Gallery

SZIKRA Art Gallery is located in the heart of Budapest, at 7 Vármegye Street in the city’s 5th district. Established in February 2020, the gallery is dedicated to presenting contemporary art through exhibitions and related programmes, while also representing a selected group of contemporary artists.

Within Budapest’s diverse gallery landscape, SZIKRA is distinguished by its particular focus on immanent artistic processes. The distinctive historical and cultural conditions of Hungary and Central Europe have, to put it mildly, rarely afforded the visual arts an opportunity for continuous, balanced and undisturbed development throughout the 20th century. This particular historical situation has left behind a certain sense of absence or discontinuity and, in many respects, sets the region’s cultural experience apart from that of Western Europe.

It is this sense of absence, rooted in the particular historical and cultural conditions of the region, and the artistic questions arising from it that lie at the core of SZIKRA’s programme. With an acute awareness of the traditions of visual art, the gallery seeks to foreground artistic phenomena and practices that develop from within the medium and its own histories. Rather than privileging predominantly socially critical or socially engaged approaches, SZIKRA focuses on artistic practices that emerge through the resonances, intersections and continuities between overlapping layers of cultural tradition.

The gallery’s aim is not simply to document the ideological foundations underlying different conceptions of art. Rather, it seeks to bring into dialogue, juxtapose and establish parallels between artistic positions shaped within the different fields of influence created by distinct cultural traditions. SZIKRA is committed to supporting artistic and image-making strategies in which art, through reflecting upon itself and engaging with its own internal histories and traditions, becomes capable of generating new aesthetic value.
