Operating in the center of Balatonfüred since 2011, the Medgyessy-Kovács Gallery is housed in a 120-year-old villa. The Gallery also functions as a studio where Gyula Medgyessy-Kovács continues his creative work. Alongside paintings, classical sculptures are also on display at the gallery, as we are also engaged in leasing artworks and furnishing office spaces.

At the Budapest Contemporary Fine Art Fair and Exhibition, visitors to the MEDGYESSY-KOVÁCS GALLERY booth can view works by several renowned, academy-trained contemporary artists and meet the creators in person.

GABRIELLA NAGY

Painter

She engages in a distinctive painting practice that is continuously renewing yet consistently structured, marked by significant solo exhibitions, public collection acquisitions, and professional awards. Working in the realm of figurative painting, she is fascinated by the illusory representation of reality, blending subtly absurd and reality-questioning surreal elements on her canvases through classical realistic techniques. She is interested in the interconnections and practices of ontologies, striving to understand human nature through self-observation. Observation is a key concept in her work. She transforms the conceptual, mythical, and visual connections inherent in nature into a sensory vision and a concentrated imagery. These are inner landscapes that evoke private stories, seeking new forms and contents within the traditional genre of landscape painting.

ZSOMBOR BARAKONYI

"Zsombor Barakonyi's world is both familiar and radically disrupted. What if a car suddenly began floating upside down over the Liberty Bridge? Or if a light aircraft sought a runway on wet asphalt under neon lights? For the artist, the metropolis is not the physical reality of concrete, glass, and steel, but an expansive, pulsating inner space. When we glimpse steel structures, overpasses, or rain-slicked tram tracks in his paintings, we should not look for concrete blueprints: what opens up before us is, in fact, a psychic topography. Through the hard, industrial grid structures of the city, the contemporary painter draws his own spiritual architecture—the frame of his thoughts and feelings. A place where the vibration of light and the silence of existential solitude do not exclude, but rather necessitate each other.

The human figures visible in the paintings—especially the iconic female figures appearing as pictures within pictures—are not specific portraits. They carry the tension of desire, closeness, and distance. They represent a meditative state: we are present, yet mentally remain within ourselves. Zsombor Barakonyi's palette works with the colors of memory. Warm oranges, cool blues, vibrant yellows, and pinkish lights construct this city that is simultaneously melancholic and hopeful. He does not tell stories; he records states."

CSANÁD BERETVÁS

Sculptor

For nearly 30 years, he has been exploring in wood, stone, and metal how nature affects humans and how humans affect nature. His aim is to display the encounters—sometimes suppressing, sometimes supporting and constructive—between organically living, developing forms and the planned, constructed, geometric world. Although some of his works appear to be abstract, each originates from existing, living content. Many of his public sculptures can be found nationwide.

Sándor Bíró graduated in 1984 from the University of Pécs with a degree in Art and Geography, after which he studied applied graphics at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts from 1986 to 1988. For over ten years, he primarily produced graphic and painting works before turning his focus to sculpture.

ZOLTÁN GY. EZÜST

Painter & Graphic Artist

Born in Békéscsaba in 1963. In 1982, he was admitted to the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, where his teachers included Imre Kocsis and Károly Raszler. In 1987, he was awarded the István Szőnyi Scholarship for three years. He has lived in Szentendre since 1998. He is a member of the Association of Hungarian Fine and Applied Artists and, since 1999, the Association of Hungarian Graphic Artists, as well as Galéria 12 Association and the IKON group of Szentendre—serving as its leader since 2024.

He also experiments with digital and photographic processes (such as cyanotype), which open up new directions for his art. In his works, he often uses cyanotype as a base and paints over it with acrylic or watercolor, or manipulates an existing work further, elevating it to a new conceptual plane.

GYULA MEDGYESSY-KOVÁCS

Painter

Gyula Medgyessy-Kovács graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts with a degree in painting. His renowned masters were Lajos Sváby and Károly Klimó. His works can be found in numerous Hungarian and international collections, such as the Körmendi-Csák Collection and the 20th Century Collection of the Hungarian National Gallery. Currently, Medgyessy-Kovács is creating a new series on the recurring theme of Jazz musicians at his Studio-Gallery in Balatonfüred. He paints his large-scale works in an expressive style using his hands and palms with pure oil paint, achieving an impasto texture that renders the paintings unique. Among his works with a post-impressionist color scheme, soft pastel tones can also be found.

JÁNOS VIZSOLYI

Sculptor

"János Vizsolyi is an outstanding representative of contemporary Hungarian sculpture, possessing a distinct voice and a consistent career path.

He graduated in 1987 from the Academy of Fine Arts as a student of Pál Kő, but since the beginning of his career, his interest has been directed toward non-figurative sculpture inspired in part by natural forms. In his stone and bronze sculptures executed with high technical precision, as well as in his exciting compositions, he has examined the fit, rhythm, and spatial relations of various organic and geometric formal elements. His public sculptures addressing similar problems—simultaneously harmonious and bearing tension—stand out significantly among Hungarian public works of the turn of the millennium and the following years.

In the late 2010s, he made a radical turn, beginning to create sculptures from sheet metal, scrap steel, and wire using welding and flame cutting. The resulting sculptural collages, or 'spatial drawings,' are far more dynamic, expressive, and at the same time passionate and dramatic compared to his previous oeuvre. His sculptures, while not denying their origin, undergo exciting metamorphoses, evoking tongues of flame, bursts of fire, algae, and deep-sea creatures, sometimes even taking on anthropomorphic forms. He often paints the sculptures in vibrant colors, endowing them with ironic subtexts, and pays special emphasis during installation to the shadows they cast."
